Danse des enfants

New Premiere 2024
Dancers Involved: Student Division (Levels I – V)

This collective piece is an experience in the journey of ballet training at Miami City Ballet School through a student demonstration spotlighting each division. This piece highlights the dedication and hard work of each student at every level throughout the school year, capturing the essence of their journey with grace and precision. Audiences will enjoy a progression of dance through classical music suites from Minuets to Gavottes; each is an excerpt from music that builds in energy and tempo.

UmbrELLA

Scène de ballet

Choreography by Durante Verzola
Composer: Mikhail Glinka
New Premiere 2024
Dancers Involved: Student Division (Level VII)

As a continuation of “Danse des Enfants” through a demonstration of level progression, this piece was created for our level VII students to feature artistically expressive dance through their technique with a piece that spotlights the culminating level of our Student Division.

Balletto Di Windsor (Windsor Ballet)

Choreography by Ariel Rose
Music: Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor (The Merry Wives of Windsor) Overture (from the Opera)
Composer: Otto Nicolai
Premiere 2024
Dancers Involved: Pre-Professional Division

“This ballet is purely inspired by the music. It’s sweet, excitingly fun and grand with a hint of comedy. I wanted to bring all of that out in the choreography and bring joy to the audience while simultaneously challenging the dancers with fiendishly fast counts and steps. Because our company and school are trained in the Balanchine style, I knew the Pre-Professional students of MCB School would be more than capable of taking on this work and making it their own. It’s been such a pleasure finally getting to know some of them whom I have only passed in the hallways or the back of company rehearsals.

I want this piece to feel celebratory for these students for all the hard work they’ve done and everything they’ve accomplished this season as well as a toast to all they will achieve in the future.”

– Ariel Rose, Choreographer & Miami City Ballet Soloist

Los Jóvenes

Choreography by Durante Verzola
Music: Polka in A-Flat Major, The Dying Poet, The Maiden’s Blush and Tico Tico no Fuba
Composer: Louis Moreau Gottschalk and Zequinha de Abreu
New Premiere – 2024
Dancers Involved: Pre-Professional I

Los Jóvenes is a premiere by Durante Verzola, created on this year’s Pre-Professional I class. It originally started as an exercise to teach the group of young dancers how to learn choreography, and how to turn the steps they were working on in class into artistic and dynamic dancing.  Throughout the year, the piece evolved into a full ballet. Verzola was inspired by the youthfulness of the dancers and wanted to capture that quality through a pure dance work. Each section has its own unique mood, and Gottschalk and Abreu‘s music is rich, layered, and nuanced, inspiring the dancers and the audience to be transported to different fleeting feelings and emotions of reminiscence.

Classical Symphony

Choreography by Durante Verzola
Music: Excerpts from Symphony No. 1 in D Major – Op. 25, Symphony No. 7 – Op. 131, and Symphony No. 6 in E Flat Major – Op. 111
Composer: Sergei Prokofiev
Premiered 2018
Dancers Involved: Pre-Professional II

Classical Symphony was originally choreographed by Durante Verzola as one of the ballets for the Miami City Ballet School 2018 Choreographic Intensive. Many of the original cast members of Classical Symphony are now in Miami City Ballet, including Mary Kate Edwards, Taylor Naturkas, and Cameron Catazaro.

Verzola was inspired by the infectious energy of the dancers he choreographed the work on, as well as the grand, powerful, yet whimsical music of Prokofiev. Verzola strived to make a work to showcase every single dancer—from the principals, demi soloists, and corps de ballet—in a way likened to an intricate crown: made up of many different gems, jewels, and diamonds. Each dancer shines brightly and individually, but come together to create one brilliant, beautiful, sparkling ballet.
