LET'S GET TO THE POINTE…
The pointe shoe (commonly known as the toe shoe) emerged during the early 19th century. Initially, they were soft ballet slippers, heavily darned at the tip. Now, modern pointe shoes are more structured and a dancer can safely perform pointe techniques and sustain a pose for a longer period of time.

DID YOU KNOW…
  • The average cost for a pair of pointe shoes is $70.
  • Pointe shoes for MCB dancers are custom made.
  • Typically, these shoes last for one performance only, and our dancers go through more than 3,000 pairs per season.
  • It costs approximately $6,000 to provide pointe shoes for each dancer, per season -- a total cost in excess of $200,000.
  • Ballerinas use approximately 5,200 squeeze tubes of super glue per season on their pointe shoes to keep them hard.
  • Dancers use adhesive tape, lamb’s wool, and Band-aids to protect their toes.
  • A pair of ballet slippers for a male dancer costs $20.
  • Approximately 750 pairs of pointe shoes are used for MCB's production of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker™ each Holiday season.

We need your help to keep us “on our toes.”
